Position Summary

The Maintenance Department at Danforth Facilities is seeking a dedicated Mechanic II Plumber to support and optimize our diverse range of plumbing systems across campus. Our facilities encompass various eras and types, requiring specialized expertise, advanced diagnostic skills, and a comprehensive understanding of plumbing equipment, codes, and modern technologies.


Under the direction of the Zone Manager and Working Supervisor, the Mechanic II Plumber works with a team of 8-10 multi-craft mechanics to perform both routine and emergency plumbing and maintenance tasks for campus facilities. Additionally, the Mechanic II Plumber collaborates closely with internal customers, including students, faculty, and staff, to resolve maintenance issues and fulfill work orders. Typical responsibilities include the maintenance, installation, repair, and inspection of plumbing and piping systems, equipment, and fixtures.


This role falls within the bargaining unit for employees who possess not only the necessary training and work experience to qualify as a Mechanic but also specialized training, advanced diagnostic skills, and an in-depth understanding of plumbing equipment, codes, and technologies that are required for the Mechanic II classification.


The ideal candidate will also support campus construction and renovation projects by actively participating in the design, construction, and commissioning phases. This includes attending construction and design meetings to contribute their expertise and ensure successful project outcomes.


This position is a member of the collective bargaining unit, Local #148 International Union of Operating Engineers, AFL-CIO.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs journeyman-level plumbing on commercial systems.
  • Maintains and repairs a variety of plumbing systems building infrastructure systems and equipment such as hot/chilled water systems, sewage lift stations, grease/chemical traps, fire pumps, loop systems, softeners, water heaters, and drainage systems, etc. Troubleshoots leak supplies and drain lines, cabling as needed up to 50 feet and smaller drain lines.
  • Responds to work orders and other requests in a timely, efficient, competent, knowledgeable and friendly manner.
  • Actively participates in the   design, construction, and commissioning phases of campus construction and renovation, including attending construction and design meetings.
  • Performs preventative maintenance based on the building needs and individual skillset (e.g., HVAC filter change, general equipment room inspections, etc.).
  • Pro-actively identifies, communicates and addresses needs without direction when appropriate.
  • Maintains data per departmental policy.
  • Utilizes materials, supplies, tools and other University property in a safe, productive manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Proficient at maintaining and repairing a variety of plumbing systems. This includes, but not limited to, fixtures such as toilets, faucets, showers, as well as building infrastructure systems such hot/chilled water systems, sewage lift stations, grease/chemical traps, fire pumps, loop systems, softeners, water heaters, and drainage systems, etc.
  • Skilled in working with a variety of pipe types including copper, iron, PVC, etc.
  • Capability to clear a range of stoppages from sink traps and toilets to cabling out main drains.
