The Department of Communication Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a one year visiting assistant professor position in the field of media and cultural studies beginning in August 2025. The successful candidate will teach 3 classes in both the Fall and Spring semesters.
This position does not require that applicants have tenure-track positions elsewhere. Applicants must have their PhDs or other terminal degrees by August 18, 2025. For more information about the Communication Arts undergraduate major, please visitThe successful applicant will be expected to teach three courses in the fall semester and three courses in the spring semester for the Department of Communication Arts.
Of those classes, two each semester will be drawn from CA 155 Introduction to Digital Media Production), CA 347 Race, Ethnicity, and Media, CA 351 Television Industries, CA 346 Critical Internet Studies. The third class each semester will be a topics class in media and cultural studies proposed by the candidate. Applicants must clearly identify which of the above courses they are ready to teach, and note several options for their topics classes; CA 155 is a production course (which includes instruction in video production, web design, and podcasting), while CA 346, 347, 351, and the topics classes are critical-cultural courses, requiring appropriate training and research background from applicants. Applicants should also be prepared to supervise graduate teaching assistants in these courses. PhD in Communications or related field
- Excellent record of scholarly achievement in media and cultural studies. Areas of focus could include media and identity, media industries, media and identity, technologies, digital production, media audiences, or research into specific cultural forms including but not limited to television, the internet, or social media.
- Excellent record of undergraduate instruction with the ability to teach media theory, history, or criticism courses. -Ability to foster inclusive teaching and learning experiences.Full Time: 100%
It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Terminal, 9 month appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding
