Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Trauma Educator to join our team. In this role, you will collaborate with the Trauma Medical Director (TMD) and Trauma Program Manager (TPM) to enhance trauma education for nursing staff, including those new to caring for trauma patients. As part of the trauma team, you will support the strategic goals of the organization and ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Professional Practice
Work alongside nursing leadership and education teams to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of care at the unit level.
Act as an expert consultant to clinical nurses, helping optimize care to achieve desired patient outcomes.
Contribute to the development of hospital policies, procedures, guidelines, and order sets specific to trauma care.
Address ethical issues in nursing practice, guiding staff and other healthcare providers to resolve them through collaboration or by engaging Ethics Consultation Services.
Assess and meet the nursing care needs of patients and families by integrating clinical knowledge into practice.
Organize meetings with orientees, preceptors, and nurse managers to review the orientation process and provide constructive feedback to new staff members.
Assist Nurse Leaders in developing learning management plans tailored to staff needs.
2. Education
Conduct an annual educational needs assessment for the department or designated area.
Develop unit- and service-based educational programs based on assessment findings.
Coordinate in-services for new products, policies, and procedures across all shifts.
Ensure successful presentation and completion of mandatory education programs for staff.
Maintain flexibility in responding to emerging educational needs.
Offer ongoing educational opportunities within the unit, department, and organization.
3. Trauma Program Responsibilities
Collaborate with trauma team members, physicians, and department leaders to align with hospital goals.
Stay informed on the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Trauma Center Criteria.
Work with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Manager to meet clinical and administrative criteria for successful verification as a Level II Trauma Center.
Assist with the preparation for and participation in ACS site visits.
Contribute to the Trauma Program's operational processes, including minutes, reporting, and follow-up actions.
Support the continued development and advancement of the trauma program.
Help with trauma program administration and policy development as needed.
4. Technology & Equipment
Demonstrate proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and other clinical business applications.
Utilize web-based incident reporting systems when necessary.
Manage payroll software effectively.
Teach staff to use biomedical equipment in assigned clinical areas with expertise.
5. Professional Development
Attend at least one program annually to meet personal development goals.
Mentor staff in their professional growth, including opportunities related to the Clinical Ladder, Specialty Certification, and other educational advancements.
Maintain clinical competence and stay current with certifications and licensure requirements.
Participate in professional organizations to demonstrate leadership within the nursing field.
6. Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with service area representatives to assess and plan staff educational opportunities.
Participate in relevant committees and meetings as needed.
Foster positive relationships across disciplines and collaborate to improve patient care.
Communicate effectively with clinical team members to ensure updates are shared regarding changes to patient care plans.
Be accessible to staff, making regular rounds and addressing concerns with Nurse Leaders and other management.
7. Performance Improvement
Lead and participate in departmental performance improvement initiatives.
Develop and implement performance or system improvement initiatives to enhance nursing practice.
Collaborate with leadership and staff to improve patient satisfaction scores in your service area.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: MSN preferred, or enrollment in an accredited graduate nursing program.
Experience: 3-5 years of clinical experience in trauma care, critical care, or emergency services, with a strong background in trauma nursing.
Skills: Experience with databases, Excel, and the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs. Teaching experience or instructor status is preferred.
